Thursday, January 24, 2002I received an email from Register.com today. They are offering domain names with a .name extension. This works a bit differently because there is no such exension as .name at the moment. What happens is that you have to submit a domain name application rather than register a domain name. This just means that you go to the organisation and ask to get a special case domain name.
This looks pretty cool but there's no guarantee that the Web community will standardise on the .name extension... they might decide to go with .me or any other extension you can think of.
...On the other hand, maybe (after seeing it in print below) my name doesn't look that cool with a .name extension. A four-letter extension looks a bit strange to me. What do you think?
Here's a portion of the .name application site. Note that the price is in US dollars so a .co.nz extension is cheaper. And don't forget to read the fine print!

Why did I receive email from Register.com?
I registered www.aienvironments.com a while ago. I just went to the first site I found that looked professional. It costs me $US35 pa with Register.com - only slightly dearer than NZ companies - and they provide good service. I have no reason to leave. I went to RegisterDirect for bills.co.nz because Register.com do not do the .co.nz extension.
Why did I get a .com extension?
- There's a very good chance that my company will go international
- .com is easier to say than .co.nz
- There is a greater demand for .com extensions - I wanted to make sure that no one else grabbed my business name
- Whenever I am looking up a company on the Net, I always type .com before I look at .co.nz
